Introducing New Fish
Red Spotted Severum
The Red Spotted Severum is a selectively bred color morph of the common Severum. Valued for its striking orange-red spots and peaceful disposition, it's a popular choice among freshwater aquarists seeking a colorful, medium-sized cichlid that’s less aggressive than many of its relatives.
Physical Characteristics
-
Size: Typically 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) in captivity; can reach up to 10 inches (25 cm) in spacious environments.
-
Coloration: Cream to golden yellow body adorned with vivid red-orange spots, most prominent across the flanks and dorsal area.
-
Sexual Dimorphism: Males may develop more pointed dorsal and anal fins and slightly brighter coloration; breeding males may show more intense hues.
Behavior and Temperament
-
Temperament: Generally peaceful for a cichlid, though semi-aggressive tendencies may show during breeding.
-
Tank Position: Mid to upper levels
-
Compatibility: Best with similarly sized, peaceful to semi-aggressive tankmates like larger tetras, rainbowfish, and other cichlids (non-aggressive types).
Breeding
-
Spawning Type: Substrate spawners
-
Breeding Setup: Provide flat stones or broad leaves for egg-laying; breeding pairs may become territorial.
-
Parental Care: Both parents guard and tend to eggs and fry, though aggression can increase during this phase.
Special Considerations
-
Red Spotted Severums are sensitive to poor water conditions, so regular water changes are essential.
-
Despite their peaceful nature, avoid housing with small fish they might see as food.
-
Their coloration intensifies with a varied and vitamin-rich diet.
Aquarium Requirements
-
Tank Size: Minimum of 55 gallons for a single specimen; larger if kept in a community.
-
Water Temperature: 24–28°C
-
pH Range: 6.0–7.5
-
Hardness: 4–12 dGH
-
Substrate: Sand or smooth gravel; decorated with driftwood and plants (though some digging may occur).
-
Filtration: Moderate to strong; they appreciate clean, well-oxygenated water.
