Raw Frozen Pilchards
What Are Pilchards?
Pilchards are small, oily fish closely related to sardines. Naturally rich in essential nutrients, they are a popular addition to raw feeding diets for dogs. When fed in their raw frozen form, pilchards retain their natural oils, vitamins, and minerals, making them a highly nutritious whole food option.
Nutritional Benefits
-
High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Supports healthy skin and coat, reduces inflammation, and promotes joint health.
-
Natural Source of Protein – Provides easily digestible, high-quality protein to support muscle maintenance and repair.
-
Rich in Vitamins & Minerals – Especially vitamins D and B12, plus calcium, selenium, and iodine to aid bone health, metabolism, and immune function.
-
Low in Saturated Fat – A leaner alternative to red meats, making pilchards ideal for dogs needing a lighter protein source.
Health Benefits for Dogs
-
Skin & Coat Health – The high omega content helps reduce itchiness, dryness, and promotes a glossy coat.
-
Joint Support – Anti-inflammatory properties may assist dogs with arthritis or mobility issues.
-
Cognitive Function – DHA in omega-3 supports brain health and is especially beneficial for puppies and senior dogs.
-
Digestive Health – Pilchards are a single-ingredient protein source, making them suitable for dogs with food sensitivities.
Feeding Guidelines
-
Whole Prey Style Feeding – Dogs benefit from eating whole fish, including bones, skin, and organs, providing natural calcium and trace nutrients.
-
Portion Sizes – Adjust based on your dog’s size and weight.

Small dogs: 1–2 pilchards a few times per week
-
Medium dogs: 2–4 pilchards
-
Large dogs: 4–6 pilchards

Frequency – Can be fed as part of a balanced raw diet 2–3 times per week.
Storage & Serving
-
Storage – Keep pilchards frozen until use. Store at -18°C or colder.
