The Blue Ram, also known as the German Blue Ram, is a classic dwarf cichlid admired for its vibrant blue, yellow, and black patterning and gentle personality. Native to slow-moving waters of South America, this species is a favourite for planted and aquascaped aquariums.

Blue Rams thrive in warm, clean, and stable water conditions. When well cared for, they display excellent colour, engaging behaviour, and natural breeding instincts, making them a rewarding species for dedicated aquarists.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Adult Size: 5–7 cm

  • Body Shape: Compact and laterally compressed

  • Colouration: Blue spangling across the body with yellow highlights and black facial markings

  • Sexual Dimorphism:

    • Males have longer dorsal fin extensions

    • Females are slightly smaller and may show a pink belly when mature

  • Lifespan: 2–4 years

Behaviour & Temperament:

  • Temperament: Peaceful

  • Swimming Level: Bottom to mid levels

  • Social Behaviour: Best kept as a pair or in peaceful communities

  • Territoriality: Mild, increases during breeding

Aquarium Requirements:

Feeding:

Blue Rams are omnivores and benefit from a varied, high-quality diet:

  • Premium micro pellets or granules

  • Frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia)

  • Occasional live foods

  • Quality flakes as part of rotation

Feed small amounts once or twice daily.

Compatibility:

Suitable Tank Mates:

  • Small peaceful tetras

  • Corydoras catfish

  • Otocinclus

  • Rasboras

  • Peaceful dwarf cichlids

Avoid Housing With:

  • Aggressive or large cichlids

  • Fin nippers

  • Boisterous or fast-swimming species

Breeding:

  • Spawning Type: Substrate spawner

  • Breeding Behaviour: Eggs laid on flat stones or leaves

  • Parental Care: Both parents guard eggs and fry

  • Notes: Stable, warm water improves breeding success

Special Considerations:

  • Sensitive to poor water quality

  • Requires consistent maintenance and stable parameters

  • Warm water requirements may not suit all community tanks

  • Best for intermediate aquarists
