The Celebes Halfbeak (Nomorhamphus liemi) is a striking surface-dwelling freshwater fish native to the streams and rivers of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Easily recognised by its elongated lower jaw, this species brings constant activity and unique visual interest to the upper levels of the aquarium.

Celebes Halfbeaks are best kept in small groups and thrive in calm, well-maintained aquariums with floating plants and gentle water flow. While generally peaceful, males may show mild territorial behaviour, making a higher female-to-male ratio ideal. Their unusual appearance and engaging behaviour make them a standout choice for experienced community fish keepers.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: 6–8 cm

  • Body Shape: Slender body with elongated lower jaw

  • Colouration: Silver to olive body with subtle markings

  • Sexual Dimorphism:

    • Males are slimmer and possess a modified anal fin (andropodium)

    • Females are slightly larger and fuller-bodied

  • Lifespan: 3–5 years with proper care

Feeding:

Celebes Halfbeaks are surface feeders and thrive on a varied diet:

  • High-quality floating flakes or micro pellets

  • Frozen foods such as daphnia, mosquito larvae, and brine shrimp

  • Occasional live foods encouraged for best health

Feed small amounts once or twice daily.

Compatibility:

Good Tank Mates:

  • Peaceful tetras

  • Rasboras

  • Corydoras

  • Small rainbowfish

Avoid:

  • Aggressive or fin-nipping species

  • Bottom feeders that disturb surface feeding

  • Large predatory fish

Special Considerations:
