Size

The American Flag Fish (Jordanella floridae) is a hardy and eye-catching freshwater fish native to Florida, USA. Named for its distinctive red, white, and blue patterning, this species is especially popular for its bold appearance and algae-eating behaviour.

American Flag Fish are best suited to semi-aggressive or species-specific aquariums, as males can become territorial, particularly during breeding. They are adaptable, resilient fish that thrive in well-planted tanks and are well suited to aquarists looking for a unique, characterful species.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Adult Size: 5–6 cm

  • Body Shape: Short, robust body

  • Colouration:

    • Males display vibrant red, blue, and white striping

    • Females are duller with olive-brown tones

  • Sexual Dimorphism:

    • Males are more colourful and territorial

    • Females are larger and less brightly coloured

  • Lifespan: 3–4 years

Behaviour & Temperament:

Feeding:

American Flag Fish are omnivorous with a strong appetite for algae:

  • Algae wafers and spirulina-based foods

  • High-quality flakes or pellets

  • Frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms

  • Occasional vegetable matter (blanched spinach, zucchini)

Feed once or twice daily in small amounts.
