The Cuckoo Catfish, also known as the Decorated Synodontis or Synodontis decorus, is a striking and active freshwater catfish from the Congo River Basin in Central Africa. Easily recognised by its long flowing dorsal fin and bold black spots on a silvery-white body, this species brings elegance and movement to any large tropical aquarium.

Growing up to 25–30 cm, the Cuckoo Catfish is a hardy and social bottom-dweller that enjoys swimming in open water and hiding among rocks or driftwood. It’s well suited to tanks of 300 L + with good filtration and moderate flow.

Semi-aggressive but generally peaceful toward larger tankmates, this catfish mixes well with African cichlids and other robust species. It’s best kept in small groups for natural behaviour.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24 – 28 °C

  • pH: 7.0 – 8.5

  • Hardness: Medium to hard

  • Minimum Tank Size: 300 L +

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive / community-safe

  • Diet: Omnivore

Feeding:
The Cuckoo Catfish accepts sinking pellets, algae wafers, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp. It forages mainly at night but will also feed during the day once settled.

Tank Setup:
Provide rock caves, driftwood, and hiding spaces to mimic its natural river habitat. Use smooth substrate and ensure plenty of open swimming area. A tight lid is recommended as Synodontis species can jump when startled.

Size & Lifespan:

  • Adult Size: 25–30 cm

  • Lifespan: Up to 10 years + with good care
