Size

The Black Banded Leporinus is a bold and eye-catching freshwater fish known for its striking vertical black stripes on a golden-yellow body. A lively and confident swimmer, it makes a stunning centrepiece for large aquariums. Native to the Amazon and Orinoco river systems in South America, this species loves strong water flow and open swimming space.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 23 – 27 °C

  • pH: 5.5 – 7.5

  • Hardness: Up to 12 dGH

  • Minimum Tank Size: 400 L +

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive

  • Diet: Omnivore

Tank Setup
Provide a spacious tank with good filtration and moderate current to mimic river conditions. Decorate with rocks, driftwood, and sturdy plants — avoid soft or delicate species as Leporinus may nibble them. A tight-fitting lid is a must, as they are strong jumpers.

Feeding
Offer a balanced mix of quality sinking pellets or wafers, supplemented with vegetable matter (such as blanched spinach or peas) and the occasional treat of frozen or live foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp.

Behaviour & Compatibility
This species can be territorial, particularly as it matures. Best kept with other medium-to-large robust fish that can hold their own — avoid slow-moving or long-finned tankmates. If space allows, keeping a small group of Leporinus can help spread aggression evenly.

Size & Lifespan

  • Adult Size: Up to 25–30 cm

  • Lifespan: 5 – 10 years (with good care)

Ideal For:
Experienced hobbyists wanting an active, beautifully patterned fish for a large tropical setup.
