The L191 Royal Pleco is a large, armored catfish known for its bold, wood-eating behavior and impressive appearance. Native to Colombia’s Rio Caquetá and Rio Orinoco regions, this variant of the Panaque genus is part of the Royal Pleco complex and is prized by pleco collectors for its striking looks and hardy nature.

Key Features

  • Coloration: Deep olive to dark green body with lighter cream or yellowish stripes running along the body and head

  • Fins: Broad, paddle-like pectoral fins and a tall, sail-like dorsal fin

  • Eyes: Bright red to orange—an identifying feature in adult specimens

  • Adult Size: 30–35 cm (12–14 inches), though some grow larger in the wild

  • Lifespan: 10–15+ years with proper care

Behavior & Temperament

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial toward other large plecos

  • Tank Position: Bottom-dweller

  • Activity: Nocturnal but may become more active during feeding once acclimated

  • Special Trait: True xylivore—consumes driftwood as part of its natural diet

Aquarium Requirements

    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard

  • Décor:

    • Large pieces of driftwood (essential for diet and digestion)

    • Smooth stones and shaded hiding areas

  • Filtration: Strong filtration with high oxygen levels and regular water changes

Diet

Omnivorous with a strong preference for wood and plant matter:

  • Driftwood (vital for digestive health)

  • Algae wafers, spirulina pellets

  • Blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, cucumber)

  • Occasional protein: bloodworms, shrimp (in moderation)

Breeding

  • Breeding in captivity is extremely rare

  • Suspected to be cave spawners in the wild

  • Little is documented about successful home breeding due to their size and specific environmental needs
