Assorted Angelfish

These majestic, popular Angelfish are known for their long, regal fins, spirited personalities, and ease of breeding. For those unfamiliar with the term "angelfish," it is important to note that in the saltwater aquarium hobby, marine angelfish are common. However, we are specifically discussing the freshwater angelfish cichlids of the Pterophyllum genus, characterized by long, wing-like fins and originating from South American rivers. This distinction is essential for understanding the unique qualities of this fish species.

Max Size:

When considering purchasing Assorted Angelfish, keep in mind their potential size and make sure to provide enough space for them. The average P. scalare angelfish reaches a body length of 6 inches (15 cm) and a total height, including fins, of 20 cm. However, the larger Altum angelfish (P. altum) can reach up to 18 cm in length and  25-33 cm in height.

Life Span:

If given a clean environment with minimal stress and high-quality foods, angelfish can live up to 8 to 12 years long.

Behaviour:

Angelfish are often labeled as "semi-aggressive" in pet stores due to their tendency to chase each other in an aquarium. This behavior is mostly motivated by breeding, with males competing for their preferred female and parents protecting their eggs and fry from other fish. However, compared to other cichlids, they are quite peaceful and can thrive in a community tank with compatible tank mates.

Tank Mates:

Keep in mind, the beautiful fins of these angelfish can attract the attention of fin nippers and fast-swimming fish during mealtimes. To ensure their well-being, avoid purchasing nano fish or small creatures that may be seen as prey by your angelfish, such as microrasboras or dwarf shrimp. Consider instead black skirt tetras, adult cardinal tetras, and cory catfish for a harmonious tank environment.

Feeding:

Angelfish are easy to feed and will take all sorts of fish foods, floating or sinking. Some favourites include krill flakes, freeze-dried bloodworms and tubifex worms, and Hikari Vibra Bites. If you want to fatten up the adults to condition them for breeding, frozen bloodworms are a must-have.
