The Longfin Spotted Bristlenose is a highly attractive freshwater catfish prized for its elegant flowing fins and distinctive spotted patterning. This unique variation of the popular Bristlenose Pleco combines the hardy, algae-eating nature of standard bristlenose catfish with extended finnage that adds extra movement and visual appeal to the aquarium. Their peaceful temperament and practical algae-grazing behaviour make them an excellent addition to tropical community aquariums.

Unlike larger pleco species, Longfin Bristlenose remain relatively compact and are well suited to medium-sized aquariums. They are most active during the evening and spend much of their time grazing on surfaces, driftwood, and decorations.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Adult Size:
    Approximately 10–15cm
  • Body Shape:
Flattened bottom-dwelling catfish body with extended flowing fins
  • Colouration:
Dark brown to black body with light cream or white spotting across the body and fins
  • Sexual Dimorphism:
Males develop prominent facial bristles and generally larger finnage, while females have smaller or minimal bristles
  • Lifespan:
Approximately 5–10 years with proper care

Behaviour & Temperament:

  • Temperament:
    Peaceful and hardy
  • Swimming Level:
    Bottom dwelling
  • Social Behaviour:
Generally peaceful with most community fish, though adult males may become territorial with other bristlenose catfish in smaller aquariums
  • Recommended Group Size:
Can be kept singly, in pairs, or in groups with sufficient space and hiding areas

Aquarium Requirements:

  • Minimum Tank Size:
    80 litres recommended
  • Water Temperature:
    23–28°C
  • pH Range:
    6.5–7.8
  • Water Hardness:
    Soft to moderately hard water
  • Water Flow:
    Moderate water movement preferred
  • Substrate:
    Sand or smooth gravel
  • Aquascape:
Driftwood, caves, rocks, and shaded hiding places are essential
  • Lighting:
    Low to moderate lighting

Diet:

Longfin Spotted Bristlenose are omnivorous grazers that require both algae and supplemental foods.

  • Suitable Foods:
Algae wafers, sinking catfish pellets, blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach, driftwood for rasping, and occasional frozen foods
  • Frequency:
1 meal daily, preferably during the evening.

Compatibility:

  • Suitable Tank Mates:
Tetras, rasboras, rainbowfish, Corydoras catfish, gouramis, and peaceful cichlids
  • Avoid Housing With:
Large aggressive cichlids, predatory fish, and highly territorial bottom dwellers in small aquariums

Breeding:

  • Spawning Type:
    Cave spawner
  • Difficulty:
    Easy to moderate
  • Notes:
Males guard eggs inside caves until fry hatch. Provide breeding caves or tubes for spawning opportunities.

Special Considerations:

  • Requires driftwood in the aquarium for digestion and natural grazing behaviour.
  • Excellent algae grazer but should not rely solely on algae for nutrition.
  • Long fins can be vulnerable to fin nipping tank mates.
  • Regular water changes help maintain healthy finnage and colouration.
