Introducing New Fish
Size

The Threadfin Acara, scientifically known as Acarichthys heckelii, is a striking and graceful South American cichlid admired for its elegant long fin extensions and peaceful temperament. Named in honor of the Austrian ichthyologist Johann Jakob Heckel, this species is the sole representative of its genus.

Appearance

Threadfin Acaras are medium-sized cichlids, typically reaching up to 20 cm (8 inches) in length. They display a silvery body with iridescent hues, a distinct vertical streak beneath the eye, and elongated dorsal and caudal fin rays, especially in males. A black blotch appears on the front of the dorsal fin and sometimes along the mid-body, varying slightly by region.

Natural Habitat

Native to slow-moving rivers and flooded forest areas of the Amazon and Essequibo river basins, the Threadfin Acara thrives in soft, slightly acidic waters with sandy or muddy substrates. These fish are also known to inhabit introduced regions such as Singapore, where they have established wild populations.

Behavior & Temperament

Despite their cichlid classification, Threadfin Acaras are relatively peaceful and sociable, making them a great addition to community aquariums with similarly sized tankmates. They are natural diggers, often excavating tunnels in the substrate to search for food or prepare breeding chambers.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 180 liters

  • Water Parameters: Temperature 22–26°C - pH 5.5–7.2

  • Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts flakes, pellets, live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.

  • Tank Setup: Soft sand substrate is ideal to support their digging behavior. Provide driftwood, rocks, and caves for shelter and breeding. Moderate to low lighting mimics their natural habitat.

Breeding

Threadfin Acaras are cave spawners. The female typically excavates a chamber in the substrate where eggs are laid and guarded. Males protect the territory, and both parents exhibit strong fry-guarding behavior after hatching.

Fun Fact

Although known for their peaceful nature, males can be territorial during breeding. Their flowing finnage and elegant movements add a touch of sophistication to any aquarium.
