Black Bulgarian Angelfish

The Black Bulgarian Angel is a unique and captivating freshwater angelfish variety derived from the popular Pterophyllum scalare species. Bred selectively in Eastern Europe—particularly in Bulgaria—this line is known for its deep, velvety black coloration and robust genetics.

Appearance

Black Bulgarian Angels are recognized for:

  • Intense black pigmentation that deepens with age

  • Tall, triangular body shape and flowing fins typical of angelfish

  • Minimal or no visible striping (depending on the specific line)

  • Striking contrast when paired with lighter tankmates or plants

Their color remains rich into adulthood, thanks to a genetic trait that reduces the presence of underlying iridescence common in other black variants.

Origin & Genetics

This variety is thought to be a result of line-breeding and selection from the Bulgarian Green angelfish strain. Unlike standard black angels, the Bulgarian line often carries a recessive trait that suppresses iridophores (light-reflecting cells), giving the fish its opaque and velvety black look.

Behavior & Temperament

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful but semi-territorial during breeding

  • Tank level: Mid to upper water column

  • Schooling: Can be kept in groups but may pair off as they mature

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 100 liters (25 gallons) for a pair

  • Water Conditions:

    • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)

    • pH: 6.5–7.5

    • Soft to moderately hard water

  • Diet: Omnivorous—accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and live foods

  • Aquascaping: Tall plants, open swimming space, driftwood for shelter

Breeding

Black Bulgarian Angels form monogamous pairs and are egg-layers, usually choosing vertical surfaces for spawning. Their parental instincts are strong, and both male and female guard eggs and fry. Maintaining excellent water quality is essential during breeding.

Ideal For:

  • Advanced hobbyists looking for a rare, visually striking angelfish

  • Display tanks with planted setups

  • Breeders interested in premium or rare angelfish genetics
